Our second third grade block was on shelters. I borrowed several books from the library by Bonnie Shemie, which gave us our reading material. We started a log dollhouse, but still have not finished it because we needed to shave off some flat areas on the logs so that they would fit together better, and since that is a job that Papa took on, it is taking a little longer than I had hoped because Papa is busy busy busy! So that project I expect to take most of the year!
We did do one fun project building a paper yurt.
Healer colored paper like wood for the lattice structure and roof poles, and he colored another paper as though it were hides sewn together. He measured and cut the pieces for the lattice walls, then glued them into the lattice structure:
Then he made the center circle and added the roof beams to it:
Then he added the outer skin cover to the bottom and top:
most of the other shelters work ended up in main lesson books, which I have not taken pictures of. He made drawings of various shelters.
Meanwhile, over in Kindergarten...

The violin in the picture above is some sort of electric toy that if you touch the metal string on the bow to the metal strings of the violin it plays twinkle twinkle little star. Our little Ollie Stomper loved it! Playing violin, just like his big brother!
Halloween:
Healer wanted to be Igor for Halloween (his friend was a mad scientist) but he needed a small pillow to pin to his back for a hump. I decided that this would be a good time to learn to use the sewing machine. First I gave him a paper that was a simple follow the path sort of thing that he stitched without thread just to get used to using the machine. Then I put in thread and he stitched a dot to dot. After that, he felt almost confident, so I gave him the fabric and he started sewing!
Then he stuffed it and then sewed the hole shut on the machine.
